Group Therapy Programs

Wheelchair Warriors

Our weekly ‘Wheelchair Warriors’ program is a specialised outdoor group therapy class designed to empower children with complex physical disabilities who use wheelchairs and rely on assistance with mobility or are just learning to maneuver their powered wheelchairs.

We understand the challenges these children and their families face, and this program is tailored to help them thrive.

Wheelchair Warriors offers a supportive and engaging environment with access to modified sporting activities where children can:

  • Enhance Mobility and Independence: We focus on improving wheelchair manoeuvring skills, including navigating various terrains, turning, and obstacle avoidance. For children learning to drive their own power wheelchairs, we help develop independence with mobility.
  • Develop Strength and Endurance: Targeted exercises help build the upper body and core strength necessary for efficient and safe wheelchair use.
  • Foster Social Interaction and Confidence: Group activities and modified sports encourage interaction with peers, building self-esteem, social skills, and a sense of community.
  • Improve Communication Skills: The program recognises the importance of communication and provides opportunities to develop these skills alongside physical ones.
  • Receive Family Support:‘Wheelchair Warriors also creates a valuable community for families, offering a space to connect, share experiences, and support one another within a physical activity and sporting context.

Wheelchair Warriors is more than just a physiotherapy class; it’s a place where children and their families can connect, learn, and grow. We aim to open up opportunities for these young people and their families to participate and contribute, fostering a sense of belonging and expanding future choices for community connection.
