Run Club: Enhancing Physical and Social Skills through Group Therapy

At Sunshine Coast Developmental Physiotherapy, our Run Club is a vital part of our group therapy programs, specially tailored for children with complex physical diagnoses. Here, we adopt an expert approach to amalgamate physical therapy and social skill development, aiming to foster holistic growth in children. Traditional one-on-one therapy sessions, while beneficial, can sometimes lead to burnout. Our unique group therapy programs, such as the Run Club, offer a fresh, engaging, and fun alternative.

Why Group Therapy Matters

From a paediatric physiotherapy perspective, group therapy provides numerous advantages. It goes beyond physical benefits to create a rich environment for developing essential social skills. Here’s why group therapy is invaluable:

Skill Development: Group therapy sessions are designed to build specific functional skills. Children learn to follow instructions, work in teams, and perform activities that translate into daily life, such as at home, school, and in community settings.

Social Interaction: Participating in group activities helps children enhance their social skills. They interact with peers, develop friendships, and learn collaborative skills.

Engagement and Motivation: Group settings keep children engaged and motivated. The fun and interactive nature of group activities ensures that children look forward to their sessions and remain committed to their therapeutic goals.

Routine and Structure: Group therapy provides a consistent routine, which is crucial for children’s development. It helps them develop time management skills and adhere to a structured schedule.

The Run Club: A Group Therapy Innovation

Our Run Club is a shining example of how specialised group therapy can make a difference. Here is an expert look at what Run Club entails and its therapeutic benefits:

Designed for Inclusivity

Who is Suitable?: Run Club is ideal for children who may not be able to run independently due to complex physical diagnoses. The use of specially designed frames makes it possible for these children to experience the joy and benefits of running.

Professional Support: The club sessions are supervised by 1-2 skilled physiotherapists, ensuring that each child receives the appropriate level of support and expertise.

How it Works

Frequency and Venue: Run Club meets twice a week at the Sunshine Coast University athletics track.

Family Involvement: We encourage families to get involved, helping to support their child’s motivation and participation in the group activities.

Equipment: Frames are available for hire. If purchasing a frame through the NDIS is a goal, we can provide necessary support.

Activities and Goals

Fitness and Mobility: Activities range from improving fitness and achieving personal best lap times to engaging in small group activities that focus on upright mobility within the frame.

Setting and Achieving Goals: Each session is designed to help children work towards their personal goals, whether it’s improving their running technique or enhancing their overall mobility.

Therapeutic Benefits

From a paediatric physiotherapy standpoint, the therapeutic gains from participating in the Run Club are immense:

Improved Physical Fitness: Regular running activities enhance endurance, strength, and overall physical fitness.

Enhanced Coordination: Frame running significantly improves motor skills and coordination, which are vital for everyday activities.

Social Skills Development: Children benefit from the social aspects of group therapy, learning to interact, share, and cooperate with their peers.

Holistic Growth: The combination of physical activity, goal-setting, and social interaction fosters holistic development in children.

The Run Club is more than just a group therapy program; it’s a community that supports the growth and development of children with complex physical needs. We recognize the importance of combining physical therapy with social interaction to create an enriching experience for every child.

We encourage families to explore the benefits of our Run Club and consider getting involved. For more information and to discuss the suitability of this program for your child, please reach out to our team.

Join us at the Run Club and let your child experience the transformative power of group therapy in a fun and supportive environment.

Paralympics and Physical Activity

If you’ve been a little bleary eyed in the last week due to some early morning starts, watching all the Paris 2024 Paralympic action, you are not alone! It’s been an inspiring and exciting week of action on the TV, made even more special knowing there are some incredible local, Sunshine Coast based athletes taking part and representing Australia! How lucky are we to live around such amazing role models and opportunity!

Alex’s Story

We are incredibly grateful to have captured Alex and his family’s story + journey to share with you all. While the disability / complex developmental journey looks different for everyone, the themes of advocacy and being part of a community are so vitally important and Trev (Alex’s Dad) gives a very real account of this.
