Enrolling your child in group therapy can offer numerous advantages, both in terms of their physical development and social skills. Group therapy, compared to one-on-one clinic-based sessions, keeps children engaged and excited about their therapeutic journey. This form of therapy has the added benefit of fostering social skills, improving the ability to follow instructions, and building functional skills in a fun and supportive environment.
Group therapy programs provide a unique platform for children to work towards incorporating therapeutic activities into their daily lives at home, school, and in other community settings. Participating in physical activities through these group sessions helps children extend their abilities to interact and play with peers, while simultaneously enhancing their fitness, strength, and coordination.
Benefits of Group Therapy
- Skill-Based Activities: Activities are designed to build specific skills, making the therapy both educational and enjoyable.
- Social Interaction: Children improve their social skills by interacting with peers.
- Developing Routines: Establishing a routine helps children gain consistency and structure in their day-to-day lives.
- Improvement in Physical Fitness: Programs focus on building fitness, strength, and coordination.
- Educational for Families: Families gain valuable knowledge on how to support their children’s development.
- Community-Based Support: These programs help build a sense of community amongst participants.
Types of Group Therapy Programs
Frame Running Club
Frame Running Club is ideal for children with complex physical diagnoses who need support to run. This program is held twice a week at Sunshine Coast University’s athletics track and is facilitated by 1-2 physiotherapists. Families are encouraged to participate alongside their children, making the therapy a collaborative effort. The club aims to improve children’s fitness and mobility, even if they cannot run independently.
Swim Club
Swim Club addresses the unique needs of children who may struggle in regular swim lessons. Held at the Sunshine Coast University indoor pool, this program offers individualized support within a small group setting. With a team of physiotherapists and Paralympic swimmers guiding the sessions, children work on swim skills and stroke correction with the goal of transferring these skills to regular swim programs. Sessions run for 30 minutes, twice a week, over a 10-week term.
Theraplay Group (Early Intervention Playgroup)
The Theraplay Group is designed for early intervention, supporting families navigating complex developmental journeys or diagnoses. Running for 10 weeks, with weekly sessions, this program offers purposeful play facilitated by one or two physiotherapists. Each session is theme-based, combining educational and hands-on activities. The emphasis is on building social connections and supporting child development within a community environment.
Dance Group
In collaboration with a dance instructor, our physiotherapist-led Dance Group uses a Hip Hop style to engage children of all abilities, including those needing assistive technology. The group accommodates children from different age groups and levels of physical ability, aiming to smooth their transition into mainstream dance classes or community-based programs. Sessions run weekly in the clinic space, and the term culminates in a concert where families can observe the progress made.
