Navigating the world of childhood disabilities and assistive technology (equipment) can be challenging, but getting the right equipment at the right time can open up new experiences and possibilities for children and their families. At Developmental Therapies, we understand the importance of providing practical and informative resources to help you on this journey, which is unique for everyone.

What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive technology (AT) refers to any device, equipment, or system that helps individuals with disabilities overcome challenges and participate more fully in daily life. For children with disabilities, AT can be transformative, enabling them to achieve greater independence and access activities in their communities.
As you’ll see in our video, parents often find that the right AT can make a world of difference to the whole family.
Examples of Assistive Technology and Their Benefits
The types of AT available are vast and varied, tailored to meet the unique needs of each child. Some common examples include:
Seating Systems, All Terrain Strollers, Wheelchairs
These provide crucial support and mobility, allowing children to participate in activities and navigate their environment with greater ease. As seen in the video, a wheelchair can open up a world of independence. Accessing mobility that does not always rely on a parent / carer to assist leads to many gains developmentally as we know children ‘move to learn’
Power Mobility
This can include early power devices for young children and power wheelchairs. These allow children to explore the learning and skill of movement with independence – keeping up with their peers. There are lots of clever ways technology is allowing children to ‘drive’ with AT, such as with eye gaze, head switching and various other methods.
Walking Frames and Mobility Aids
These tools assist with balance and stability, enabling children to walk and move more confidently. The video highlights how these aids reduce fatigue, build independence and allow children to keep up with their peers.
Standing Frames
These allow children to practice their standing, without always needing help to achieve this + to give stability to their body to stand and participate in fun activities.
Adapted Sports Equipment
Equipment such as frame runners, trikes, adapted basketball wheelchairs allow children to participate in sports and recreational activities, fostering social connection and physical fitness. As the parents in the video found, these technologies can open up “different worlds.”
Communication Devices
These can range from simple picture boards to sophisticated electronic systems, helping children express themselves and interact with others.
How Assistive Technology Can Help
Assistive technology can significantly improve a child’s quality of life by:
Promoting Independence: Enabling children to perform tasks they previously couldn’t OR with less support / assistance needed
Enhancing Mobility: Allowing for greater freedom of movement and exploration across a varied range of environments / activities
Improving Communication: Facilitating social interaction and ability to express needs / wants / preferences
Increasing Social Participation: Helping children engage in activities with their peers
Reducing Fatigue: Conserving energy for daily activities and learning
Although the journey to finding the right equipment can have its challenges, the results are significantly worth it. At Developmental Therapies, we are committed to helping families find the right assistive technology to support their child’s developmental needs.
