Park Run Club

What is the Park Run Club group?

Park Run Club is a group physiotherapy intervention, focussed on achieving running, mobility and gross motor goals through therapist-led games and scaffolded physical activities.

At Park Run, we achieve physical goals through group games & gross motor activities, while training specific and evidence based skills. Thursday is a little bit less formal & structured than Mondays (at the USC athletics track), due to the environment & setting.

Park Run has specific links to building the physical literacy and fundamental movement skills required for community based or mainstream groups (such as a local soccer club). By scaffolding activities in a supportive and differentiated way, we aim to build a range of skills and then transition our young people to groups in their local communities.

Who is Park Run Club for?

Park Run Club is designed for young people in pre-prep, primary school or early high school, who are keen to exercise and build movement skills in an outdoor environment.

Park Run Club has a wide range of ages, however this builds a different set of skills for participants and gives a true “community club” feeling.

Specifically, Park Run Club may be suitable for young people with the following goals:

    • Building physical literacy skills, including physical, psychological, cognitive and social components.
      • For example – following a structured routine of physical activities, while participating in group activities with others (which may include managing feelings that come with winning & losing, or being challenged!)
    • Practicing a range of fundamental movement skills, with differentiated support to build skills and meet individual needs (such as communication, physical, visual or hearing).
    • Developing skills in following a structured routine, including non-preferred activities.
    • Participating in structured movement activities, with peers, in a meaningful and goal directed way.

We are able to support young people with additional mobility requirements (such as using a walker or race runner), however participants do need to be able to mobilise on grass (with or without support).

What Does the Park Run Group Program Involve?

Park Run Club runs over a 10 week period, aligned with the school term, for 45 minutes.

    Sessions include:

    • A range of physical activities including running games, common skills required for school (such as athletics skills, taking turns, being a good team mate, sportsmanship, winning/losing), following routines, interacting with others, as well as working on strength, fitness, endurance & speed.
    • Sessions start with a warm up, structured games/activities and end with a check in & stretch as a team. We aim to adjust all activities to our athlete’s individual goals & abilities, so our training is accessible to everyone.
    • Parents and/or support workers are expected to remain in the general vicinity of the group. Many of our parents or support workers choose to jump into the session with their child, to support, have fun, or learn a new activity to do at home.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who runs the Park Run Club sessions?
A: Park Run Club is facilitated by a Physiotherapist, with support from an Allied Health Assistant.

Q: What happens if it’s raining?
A: We carefully monitor the weather before Park Run Club, due to its outdoor location. If it is raining, we will move the Park Run Club indoors to the clinic at Minyama (with the exception of very heavy rain, when we will cancel). We will always send a text message as soon as possible, if the weather is looking like rain.

Q: What additional supports do you use in this group?
A: Support strategies change depending on the participants each term.

    Examples of strategies used include:

    • Social stories – parents or support workers can read with their child to explain what is going to happen, expectations and strategies the child can use during the session.
    • Visual aids – communication boards, interactive visual schedule, positive behaviour reward chart.
    • Communication aids – emotion check in boards, visual communication boards, individual participant communication aids.
