Swim Club

Achieve Fun, Fitness, and Participation Goals in the Water

What is Swim Club?

Swim Club is a specialised, 10-week small-group program designed and led by our expert Physiotherapists. Rather than being a traditional hydrotherapy session, Swim Club focuses specifically on teaching vital learn-to-swim skills, water safety, and stroke correction.

For many children with additional needs, the large group sizes, busy environments, or standard teaching approaches of regular swim centres can make success challenging.

We provide a higher level of 1:1 support within a small group context. Our staff are right there in the pool with the children, ensuring safety while delivering the intensive practice needed to master swimming techniques.

Who is the Swim Club for?

Swim Club is specifically designed for children who:

  • Require a tailored therapy approach or additional support to achieve their swim-specific goals.
  • Find the sensory environment or structure of regular learn-to-swim lessons overwhelming.
  • Need higher intensity practice and a specialised teaching style to learn stroke correction.
  • Have group-based participation goals, such as building friendships and learning to be part of a team in the water.

Our ultimate goal is to equip children with the skills and confidence needed to eventually take their abilities back to a regular mainstream Learn to Swim program or swim squad.

What Does the Group Involve?

Children attend a 30-minute session once a week across a 10-week term, allowing for repeated practice and maximum skill retention. Sessions are held in a quieter, highly supportive environment outside of a regular busy aquatic centre.

A typical Swim Club session involves:

  • Warm-Up: We start with dry-land stretches to get the body ready.
  • Group Exercises: We get into the pool for small-group, swim-specific exercises that foster teamwork, socialisation, and water safety.
  • 1-on-1 Physiotherapy Support: Each child works one-on-one with a Physiotherapist on individualised, stroke-style specific goals.
  •  World-Class Facilities: Sessions are held at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) indoor pool. These purpose-built, highly accessible facilities allow our kids to train in a 25-metre training pool.
  • Inspiring Environment: Participants benefit from coaching support from our Physios and the Exercise Science team, often swimming alongside athletes and Paralympic swimmers, exposing them to incredibly strong community role models!

In just our first term, we’ve already seen amazing therapeutic benefits. Kids are becoming more streamlined in the water, developing significantly better breathing control, improving their physical strength and coordination, and building beautiful friendships.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Swim Club a hydrotherapy program?
A: No. While it is run by our Physiotherapy team, Swim Club is distinctly different from hydrotherapy. It focuses specifically on practical learn-to-swim skills, stroke correction, fitness, and water safety, rather than strictly therapeutic water-based rehabilitation.

Q: What are the long-term goals of attending Swim Club?
A: By attending this specialised 10-week block, the goal is for your child to develop physical fitness, water confidence, and technical swimming skills. Once they have built a strong foundation, we encourage and support families to transition their child back into regular community Learn to Swim programs or swim squads.

Q: Do parents need to get into the pool with their child?
A: No, parents do not need to get into the water. Our Physiotherapy team provides 1-on-1 support directly in the pool during the session to guide your child through their exercises and stroke correction. You are welcome to watch, cheer them on, and celebrate their progress from the poolside!
