Groove & Move Group

What is the Groove & Move group?

Junior Groove & Move is a smaller group based therapy intervention, aimed at developing meaningful movement skills in a fun and engaging way.

Our sessions include explicit practice of social skills required for group activities, following routines, engaging in a structured session and building the skills children require to help them learn to physically engage, within groups with their peers.

Groove and Move is particularly useful for kids who are developing their physical literacy, developing gross motor & coordination skills, learning to move their body in a “structured way” and learning how to interact with others in a group setting.

These sessions are particularly designed to support the needs of young people who may require a higher level of scaffolded support, such as visual aids, communication aids, or physical supports.

This helps children build the skills to successfully transition to community or mainstream based physical activities.

Who is Groove & Move for?

Groove and Move is designed for young people in early to mid-primary school, as well as young people in “pre-prep” who are preparing to transition to school.

Specifically, Groove & Move may be suitable for young people with the following goals:

    • Building physical literacy skills, including physical, psychological, cognitive and social components.
      • For example – bringing movement skills together with the cognitive skills of following a routine and completing specific dance moves in a specific order.
      • Practicing a range of fundamental movement skills, with differentiated support to build skills and meet individual needs (such as communication, physical, visual or hearing).
      • Developing skills in following a structured routine, including non-preferred activities.
      • Participating in structured movement activities, with peers, in a meaningful and goal directed way.

What Does the Group Program Involve?

Groove & Move runs over a 10 week period, aligned with the school term, and uses music and dancing as the “vehicle” for physical activity and movement.

      • Each session is 45 minutes, and includes a hello, emotions check in, warm up, movement activities (based around dancing), cool down and emotions check in.
        • Each session utilizes music and dance as a “vehicle” for movement, incorporating gross motor activities, dance sequences, creative free movement, and structured games to build physical literacy.
        • Participants in Groove & Move are encouraged to attend with their parent or support worker.

        Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who runs the Groove & Move sessions?
A: Groove & Move is facilitated by a Physiotherapist, with support from an Allied Health Assistant.

Q: Will Groove & Move be supportive enough for my child?
A: Groove & Move is designed to be a smaller sized physiotherapy intervention, that allows for close monitoring and differentiation of support provided. We encourage participants to attend consistently for a few weeks, to allow participants to get used to the routine, structure and for staff to develop a “repertoire” of tools to help your child succeed.

Q: What additional supports do you use in this group?
A: Support strategies change depending on the participants each term. Examples of strategies used include:

        • Social stories – parents or support workers can read with their child to explain what is going to happen, expectations and strategies the child can use during the session.
        • Visual aids – communication boards, interactive visual schedule, positive behaviour reward chart.
        • Communication aids – emotion check in boards, visual communication boards, individual participant communication aids.
