Flex and Flow

Group physiotherapy for teens

What is Flex and Flow Group?

Flex and Flow is a group physiotherapy intervention designed specifically for adolescents and teenagers who are wanting to exercise in a group, while building skills to manage their own bodies and commitment to exercise routines.
Facilitated by a Physiotherapist and Allied Health Assistant, this group focuses on targeted whole body strengthening, cardiovascular endurance, balance and stretching. Participants are active contributors in the group with the aim to build their knowledge, skills and confidence to manage long term health and wellbeing needs.

The group aims to provide exposure to activities and environments that would be similar to a real life “gym”, while still scaffolding and differentiating sessions to meet individual needs. This supported learning opportunity teaches skills that are vital to successfully transitioning to accessing mainstream services (such as a local gym) and managing personal health and wellbeing into early adulthood.

Who is Flex and Flow for?

This group is ideal for adolescents and teenagers who would benefit from support to build autonomy and accountability regarding their physical health and wellbeing.
It provides a supportive environment where young people can build their knowledge, skills and confidence in managing their personal health needs, while participating in regular physical activity. Additionally, the group offers the opportunity to connect and socialise with peers of a similar age and ability.

Prerequisites for Participation

Flex and Flow is suitable for adolescents and teenagers currently on our caseload who have goals related to:

Building independence with exercise routines

Improving body awareness and movement confidence

Working towards longer-term self-management outcomes

Connecting and socialising with peers of a similar age, while exercising

Building strength, cardiovascular endurance, balance and stretching routines

Flex & Flow requires the ability to participate in a reasonably fast paced group environment, with timed rotations, set exercises and gym style activities.

Please speak to your current Physiotherapist to determine suitability and to establish individual goals for the program.

What Does the Group Program Involve?

Flex and Flow sessions include practical and targeted exercises over a 10 week period, which are fun, engaging but also challenging for this specific age group.

  • Participants write their own exercise goals in Week 1, and participate in a baseline assessment as a group. This increases program accountability, and begins to build links between personal goals and actionable activities to achieve goals.
  • From weeks 2-9, participants complete a 45 minute session, with a “curriculum” of fortnightly activities (for example, a fortnight focussed on upper body strength & stretching). Each session includes a social check in, warm up, exercise rotation and cool down.
  • Sessions are structured and fast paced (within reason), with the aim to increase participant independent accountability and commitment to the session. This ensures that participants are learning the skills to eventually transition to mainstream/community physical activity settings. Participants are expected to work hard, and the program includes education around the benefits of exercise, physical activity and managing personal health & wellbeing.
  • Participants receive a weekly home exercise program, to complete at home before the next session. This “homework” component is an essential key to building personal accountability, commitment and independence in managing health & well being.
